Reason for the name
Clive War Memorial Swimming Pool was built by the Clive & District Community in 1955 as a memorial to those lost from the district in time of war.
The Clive War Memorial Pool is located in Farndon Park, off Farndon Road at the intersection with State Highway 2, in Clive, Hawke’s Bay.
The original entrance gate to Farndon Park, with the memorial plaque, was at the intersection. However, access is now off Farndon Road.
At the time, the Government had a policy of matching funds for memorial projects that were of use to the wider community, such as community halls or facilities for wide community use.

The community spent some time assessing what type of memorial they would like, considering an additional community hall with Plunket rooms and other facilities, before settling on a competition sized swimming pool based in Farndon Park, a memorial gate entering the park with a plaque showing the names of all those from the area who had served overseas, an avenue of golden oak trees with name plaques for those who had made the supreme sacrifice and a children’s playground.
The project was approved and the Clive war memorial swimming baths (now known as the Clive War Memorial Pool) was designed and built.
The pool became the property of the Hastings District Council in 1989.
Clive War Memorial Swimming Pool Charitable Trust was established in 1989 to manage the pool.
Originally an outdoor swimming pool, the Trust decided to cover the pool in 1994 so it could be used all year round. They shortened the pool to 25 metres, to cater for competitive swimming, enclosed the pool and heated it so it could be available year round.
